There was some hot debate on shaving Pomeranians when I added my first post and photos on the subject in 2009, so I thought I'd stay on top of this with yearly updates on how Gizmo is doing with his haircuts.
Here is a few pics of the Giz before/during/after his 2010 haircut. I'm still not seeing a downside to shaving him, contrary to some who have poo-pooed this practice. There is a lot of talk about how it ruins the undercoat, but if you are using a long blade to just trim down the long hairs (I use a #7), then it doesn't interfere with the undercoat.
Here, Riley hams into a photo and tries to crush Gizmo in December. His coat grew back wonderfully from the 2009 shave.
Here is Giz right after getting shaved in May, 2010, pawing at an invisible toy on the couch. He's a little lamb!
Here, Gizmo is hatching a plan to get out of the house at the end of July. You can see his red is already starting to come back.
Here he is in August, ready for football practice. His undercoat is still visible, but he is definitely looking more red. He was still hot out on the field, but had enough energy to play and use people as chairs.
And here is Giz at the pet store (he thinks it's the zoo) in the Winter of 2010, with his coat fully restored. I only shave once a year and I use a #7 blade at the smallest. There are other blade sizes for other shaving systems, so I'm not sure that the #7 rule applies to everyone.
All in all, I am sticking with shaving him in May each year. You can do what you want with your pom, but this is how mine is doing. Just fine. Besides... I think it's Riley we really need to worry about:
